When positioned right, red sprites can be seen firing with active updrafts in the foreground. One of the most incredible displays in nature is watching an angry storm system with constant lightning and a bubbling updraft region. Though these areas usually aren't sprite producers, they add some incredible shapes, colors and overall drama to the scene.

" Many studies have found that sprites were associated with weakening convective lines or intensifying stratiform regions, but these studies mostly looked at large MCSs, which often have many cells in various lifecycle stages." (Lang , 2016)

Chasing Ghosts collection image

Ever since I was a child, I have been obsessed with the night sky. As an adult, I still look up in wonder and have tried to capture some of that feeling in photographs. This collection represents several years of my studying, chasing, and imaging some of the rarest events in our atmosphere that are only visible at night- Red Sprites. These are all real scenes, images of massive and intricate atmospheric breakdowns above strong lightning strikes. They are tough to predict and very fast which leaves them extremely difficult to image. With every capture, a little bit of their mystery is revealed, yet they still remain very little understood to this day. This collection contains 10 full-frame, single shot images of Red Sprite events over distant storms. It encompasses some of my best captures from five years of chasing.
