More than a half-century before Judit Polgar, Vera Menchik regularly battled the world’s top male chess stars, including five World Champions. Meanwhile Menchik dominated women’s chess throughout her war-shortened life, from finishing 1st in the inaugural Women’s World Championship tournament in 1927 to winning six similar tournaments and two championship matches over the next 17 years. This film presents the critical endgame phase of one of her two victories over Max Euwe, who went on to become World Chess Champion from 1935-37 and president of the world chess federation in the 1970s.
