KU-04: Oenochoe is part of the Kintsugi Upgrades series that blurs the ancient and futuristic. The word Oenochoe translates to literally mean wine jug in greek. The top part of this graceful new artifact is from the classical period of Greek pottery. An elegant container with a finely curved handle and heart shaped mouth, the oenochoe is rebirthed into a multiverse future. Re-imaginging the experience of drinking wine in a future where people were batch producing their libations for themselves instead of buying them from stores. The bottom part of the Kinstugi upgrade is a modular winemaking system. The module on display for KU-04 above is the fermentation stack up, but that can easily be replaced with an aging module or a filtration module. Wine making in a technologically advanced cottage industry world.

The Kintsugi Upgrades project imagines an alternate future where ancient artifacts are discovered by a more advanced civilization than us who rebuild and augment them with enhanced technologies.

The ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi – which literally translates to “join with gold” – perfectly embodied the spirit of these objects. Through the process of repair and reconstruction, we imagined these objects being even more valuable than the original.

This project began when we came across high quality 3D models of ancient cultural artifacts that had been scanned by internationally recognised museums. We digitally shattered the artifacts and then began reassembling them with new features and components that at we thought might be the type of technology a more advanced society might have.
