Obi prospered for 280 years from 1588 to the beginning of the Meiji era (1868-1912), as the castle town of the Obi/Ito family clan. The town still retains its Edo period samurai residences and stone walls, and there is a clear stream in a canal where many colorful Nishikigoi swim.
