This image is part of the "Magical Guilin", a collection of images captured in Guilin, China, including images of the Mystical Li-River, Longji rice terraces, Cormorant Fisherman and more.

Cormorant fishing is a Chinese tradition that goes back more than 1,000 years. The fishermen tie small snares around the cormorants' necks. The bird catches a fish in its beak but can't swallow it, and then returns to the boat, where the fisherman retrieves the catch.

Here is a shot of a fisherman and his trained cormorants resting on his raft. One of my favorite evenings in Guilin, China.

Magical Guilin collection image

I remember the first time seeing Guilin's landscape was in a series of old Chinese painting displayed on my grandma's wall when I was a kid.

Fast forward to 2019, I was given the opportunity to visit and photograph the magical landscape of Guilin in China. Seeing it for the first time in person felt like I was instantly transported back in time in that very room where I first saw the painting. Guilin's landscape was like a giant artwork in front of me and that's where the inspiration of each pieces from this collection came from—recreating my memory through captured reality.
