Cast of Characters presents a selection of costumes by Dennis Nance celebrating the absurdity of the everyday. By becoming a bat, a turkey, a gingerbread man, a popsicle or a snail, Nance celebrates the cycle of the seasons. He seeks out the moment when a costume transforms not only the person wearing it, but the environment it inhabits and audience it interacts with.

This item features the artist dressed as a Turkey and was used as the November character. The image was taken at the H-E-B grocery store in Montrose in Houston, TX.

This collection features the 12 images used in the original Cast of Characters calendar was part of a project of the same title sponsored by the Idea Fund and the Houston Arts Alliance in 2016. The physical costumes, sewn by the artist, have been included in exhibitions at Box 13 ArtSpace, Austin College, and the ICA Boston. Intended as a way to make artist practices accessible outside of conventional environments audiences experience work by artists, 250 copies of the printed calendar were distributed as part of the project. The now are offered here to occupy virtual space.
