Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American military pilots. Their squadron was formed in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1941. In 1944, the 100th, 301st and 302nd and the 99th black fighter squadrons made up the 332nd Fighter Group in Italy. They began flying P-51 Mustangs to escort heavy bombers in enemy territory. When the pilots decided to paint the tails of their planes red for identification, the nickname "Red Tails" was coined. The significant contributions of the airmen during WWII helped pave the way for full integration of the U.S. military. CryptoPeops collectible character.
