One of the things that remains most special to me about this image is that it is one of two images included in this collection I took it in the company of Jamie Joseph, founder of Saving The Wild.

June of 2021 we were in Uganda, and spent three days tracking gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. As the name suggests, this is not an easy place to trek, with steep slopes, muddy banks and many small rivers to cross but eventually, on the second day, we got the perfect sighting. Our time with the gorillas is strictly limited to an hour and I had barely enough time to take this picture.

Saving the Wild x Will Fortescue collection image

It is impossible when observing a wild animal to not consider its capacity as a sentient being. So much so, that the longer you spend in their presence the more obvious it becomes.

I am delighted to work with Saving the Wild, an organization driven to protect wildlife by fighting organized crime - one of the leading causes of wildlife population decline. Through sheer hard work, bravery and determination, Jamie Joseph, the Founder, has been one of the leading lights exposing the ‘blood rhino blacklist’, a story documented by the BBC and continues to fight the bad guys to make the world a safer one for wildlife.

This series, one that supports Jamie and her work, had been curated over the last three years. Capturing it has required thousands of miles of travel and taken me to within just a few feet of the subjects I am photographing. - Will Fortescue
