Nothing fires the imagination like a mysterious hero with a secret identity. Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? Is he a singular entity or a group of geniuses that banded together to create the world's first decentralized digital currency? Several people have claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto, however, all the claims were conclusively dismissed, making the identity of Nakamoto likely as valued as the amount of bitcoin in his digital wallet.

As the creator of one of the biggest innovation mankind has seen to date, he was successful in staying anonymous throughout the gradual expansion of the crypto world. In 2008 he authored the bitcoin white paper and created and deployed bitcoin's original reference implementation. As part of the implementation, Nakamoto also devised the first blockchain database. In the process, Nakamoto was the first to solve the double-spending problem for digital currency using a peer-to-peer electronic cash system. In January of 2009 he released version 0.1 of the bitcoin software and launched the network by defining the genesis block of bitcoin (block number 0), which had a reward of 50 bitcoins.

He communicated with the outside world strictly through email, becoming as much of a mystery as Anonymous. The last correspondence with Satoshi happened on April 23rd in 2011, when he claimed he was moving on to other things and believing that Bitcoin is in good hands. Since then, Satoshi has not initiated any contact, making the crypto world wonder whether he is alive, dead or maybe even imprisoned. For now, no one knows, who Satoshi is, and that is probably what he would have wanted.

Dead or alive, the one thing we do know is that he will forever remain a symbol of hope to help us fight against everything wrong with the current financial system.
