Koto was sold to a vendor by hunter on Nzambi, confiscated after two months and delivered to Brazzaville orphanage by plane. Depressed and dehydrated she recovered her health with help of surrogate mother and was reintroduced into the wild as part of Dkjeke’s group. I had trekked for two days to find the group in the forest. Koto watched me with interest as I went round taking the portraits of the gorilla’s in her group. She is now a mother and the dominant female in a new group.
James and Other Apes (#JAPES) presents 52 celebrated portraits of great apes, captured by James Mollison across four years and four continents. Shot in the aesthetic of the passport photograph, each Jape has their own unique traits and characteristics, and powerful stories which can be found at ART3.io/japes. 10% of net funds raised through NFT sales will be donated to the sanctuaries who rescued the apes and invited James in with his camera, and initial collectors will receive an archive quality certificated print with their Jape.
