Flat Earth 62/250

Flat Earthers believe the earth is not a spheroid but flat like a disc. Contemporary science (and, in fact, even the ancient Greeks) says differently, but I’m fascinated by the Flat Earth theories because their stance is rooted in the idea one should think for oneself and that for whatever reason a lot of people are misled. While I don't agree with the outcome in this instance, their observational, independent-thinking approach is the basis of science. Also, reading about projects like MKUltra gives one enormous empathy for those who think the government might be lying to them. As an artist and longtime lover of mapmaking I have always appreciated the romance of the unreachable or unknowable areas of ancient maps. Whether those are the arctic precipice of disc-shaped earth or the far reaches of spacetime I believe our exploration of inner and outer space are always somehow connected.

What we believe is obviously shaped by what we observe, but what we perceive is also shaped by our beliefs. In our age of internet misinformation it is often difficult to know what's true or false, and we create our own narratives in an attempt to bring purpose and meaning to an ever-changing, complex world.

A recent survey revealed that many people believe in conspiracy theories such as the assassination of JFK wasn't done by one person (48%), secrets about aliens are hidden in Area 51 (27%), the Illuminati are covertly ruling the world (21%), the government is using chemtrails to manipulate us (19%), and Earth is flat (3%). And then there are those, like MKUltra, that have been well documented and proven horrifyingly true.

For this project, I sought to explore the reasoning behind these narratives and produce evocative images that capture their emotional essence.
