As a child, I was fascinated by Lego. I didn't have that many building blocks, but I kept building new things with them. When I had children myself, I bought used building blocks and figures for them. I opened the package and looked at the figures, I was terribly disappointed. They weren't the highly polished figures that I had expected. They were dirty. They were broken. And they were common. I put the box aside and didn't open it for years. But they never got out of my mind and one day I saw their soul. I saw what they have experienced all these years in many children's rooms. No matter what, no matter how bad it was. They have never lost their smile. I tried to capture this smile and its story with the help of 17 portraits.
