The Tortoise Trainer is a painting by Osman Hamdi Bey, with a first version created in 1906 and a second in 1907.

  • Standing thoughtfully, the man hopes to accomplish the difficult task of taming the turtles, which requires patience, by stealing the ney and the nakkare on his back. According to this interpretation, the trainer is Osman Hamdi Bey himself. The fact that the trainer tries to handle the difficult task with the musical instruments in his hand emphasizes that Osman Hamdi Bey also tried to bring a society that resists change to a contemporary level through art, and therefore he attempted to open an art school and a museum.
