Melted Masks

The “Melted Masks” series is comprised from 100 paintings, each with a blank background and different faces/masks relevant to people who I have encountered. The theoretical basis comes from inspiration of Nietzsche and Bakhtin’s discussion on the aesthetic significance of a mask. Masks can close gaps or distance differences between people. The mask’s surface function is to cover up, while humanity is still eager to communicate. Everyone has a mask to hide their true self. The dissolution of the mask explains the process of breaking away from the illusion and facing the self. I want to present the individuals surrounded by the noisy world with the peaceful, desolate, and lonely language of painting. This collection involves intelligently mashed up video imagery of the mixed media paintings done on wood panels.
