SCMP X OSC 2021 - Frog King Kwok

Kwok Mang Ho, better known as Frog King Kwok, was born in 1947. He studied Chinese ink art under the late Lui Shou-kwan, a pioneer of the New Ink Art movement, while also becoming drawn to performance and conceptual art early on. In 1979, he made the first site-specific public performance art piece in mainland China, called the “Plastic Bag Project”, on a section of the Great Wall. Later, he enrolled in the Art Students League of New York between 1980 and 1984 and threw himself into the city’s street art culture, winning a National Endowment for the Arts community art award in 1987. He resettled in Hong Kong in 1995 and has continued to create art that challenges boundaries. Best known for his outrageous costumes, spontaneous “happenings” and his unique calligraphy in a half-English, half-Chinese “Sandwich Font”, he has participated in numerous major international exhibitions and represented Hong Kong at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011.
