June 30, 2010 - I got one of those inexpensive PCMCIA adapters - USB 2.0, AKE BC168. Apparently this card interferes with shutdown and restart. I thought this must be the problem because the USB stick (external hard drive) connected to the laptop keeps getting shoved around.
This causes conflict.
I tried disabling this adapter, but that didn't help.
I tried it on another system along with a laptop - but it didn't make a difference.
I know there is a problem.
I also know this issue has nothing to do with USB sticks.
