When numbers get serious … The Greek mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras (ca. 570–490 BC) is said to have been able to recall his previous lives, he could speak to bears and eagles, he even had a golden thigh. But first and foremost and last but not least: he taught that “all things are number”. And his favorite number? The answer is ten; 10. So this coin is for you, Pythagoras! (Note to Peter the Great: We have borrowed your conventional two-headed eagle symbol on the obverse of this coin.)

Perhaps we should have minted 10 coins of this type. But at the end of the day we opted for just one. One of its kind.

www.svalbard.money is a Norwegian NFT-project initiated by SpareBank 1; the second largest finance group in Norway. The fascinating monetary history in Svalbard constitutes the core of the project: In the 20th century, American, British, Norwegian, Russian/Soviet and Swedish coal companies issued local currencies in Svalbard; notes and (Soviet) coins; money based upon real mining and physical proof of work.

The digital Svalbard notes are unique reproductions of various Anglo-Russian, Norwegian and Soviet Svalbard notes. The decentralized production of such notes ceased on February 7th 2022 when the Ethereum blockchain reached block nr. 14159265. Learn more about this part of our project in the Svalbard money white paper:

The digital Svalbard coins pay homage to the Svalbard coins that were minted in Leningrad just after WW2. Read all about it in a richly illustrated “white paper light” here:
