Hossumori

It depicts the specter of Hossu, one of the Buddha's tools, sitting in zazen under a canopy. Hossu is a sacred Buddhist implement in China that is said to dispel demons that evoke vexations. Toriyama Shiyan writes, "Even dogs have the Buddha nature, and the spirit of the hara-ko, which has been on the floor of zazen for nine years holding a lantern, should also be in the position of sitting in the yukka (sitting posture). This is one of the famous Zen questions and answers. The phrase "nine years is a long time" comes from an anecdote about Daruma, the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism, who practiced zazen for nine years.

払子守（ほっすもり）

仏具のひとつである払子（ほっす）の妖怪が天蓋の下で坐禅を組んだ姿で描かれている。払子とは、中国では煩悩を呼び起こす悪魔を払うと言われ神聖な仏具とされている。鳥山石燕は、「狗子にさへ仏性ありけり、まして伝燈をかかぐる坐禅の床に、九年が間うちふつたる払子の精は、結加趺坐の相をもあらはすべし」と、犬にも仏性があるんだから払子にもあるだろ、という事を書いてある。この狗子仏性というのは有名な禅問答の一つ。また、九年が間ーーという件は、禅宗の祖、達磨が坐禅を九年間し続けたという逸話に由来している。
