It is a large eagle, the largest in the western and southern hemisphere, reaching 100 cm in total length and a wingspan of up to 200 cm. This species is classified as Near Threatened because it is suspected to be declining moderately fast due to hunting and habitat loss. Although it is still reasonably common in the Amazon forests of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil, it will only survive in the long term if the loss, fragmentation and degradation of the forests in its areas of location is controlled and a network of Bookings.
