So often I hear sentiments that echo the idea that to be traditional things have to be super serious and spiritual. I always point to the fact that our ancestors did wear, create and embody things for adornment. If it was important for why can’t it be important for us? Secondly if we take our cues from the world around us, we don’t have to look any further than the butterfly to see, sometimes it’s ok to do things just to be beautiful.
I started painting "Medicine Paintings," when I found out that my ancestors painted their faces to share a dream, manifest a hope, pray for healing or to celebrate a significant life event. The paintings in this collection do the same thing except in the digital world. Each painting is created using the iconography of my people the Nlaka’pamux, they include ancestral understandings of color and design. Starting today March 14, 2022 I will release a new "Medicine Painting," everyday for the next 1000 days, increasing the price of each painting incrementally depending on gas fees. I am making this commitment to working with my ancestral visual language on a daily basis so I can familiarize myself with each symbol and motif and share that journey with my friends, family, followers and community. I have been developing a visual dictionary for my community and will be using 50% of the profits from this NFT project to print the dictionary for reserve schools and community members.
