Along with the Swiss Franc, it was considered the most stable currency in Europe. The DM had a reputation as a "hard" currency.

The establishment of the European Economic and Monetary Union and the introduction of the Euro on January 1, 1999 replaced the Deutsche Mark as an independent monetary unit.
