On November 8th 2017, Andrew Cotton experienced one of the most terrifying wipeouts of all times while surfing in Nazaré, Portugal. Cotty broke his back, was rescued and taken to the hospital, he was unable to surf for an entire season while recovering from his injuries. He later won the 2018 WSL's "Wipeout of the Year Award" with this accident and still to this day this is one of the most viral moments ever captured in Big Wave Surfing, featured in CBS's 60 Minutes and hundreds of news pieces around the world.
