Ghostships at dawn

In the high summer the night touches the day, eliciting an elusive ambient light. Early, the sun’s rays appear through the mist not long after they slipped away. The ancient harbour is stirred to life, caressed by the dappled glow, welcoming imagination. The haar blows in, and the ships stand still and tall, lingering before the old stone breakwater. The gulls rise in unison, alarmed by this apparition. Slivers of sunlight move stealthily downward to warm the path, and as the land becomes accustomed to the heat, the masts and sails disappear like ghostships at dawn.
