This character is one of the sisters that opposed and fought against the same cruel dictatorship that assassinated them. They are well known in the Dominican Republic and across Latin America for their feminist resistance against the regime. Their death became a symbol for the country, and months later the country gained their independence. They are part of our history books, same books I studied and learned about. I personally have always looked up to these women as a symbol of empowerment, resistance, feminism and standing up for what is right. They embody what a true heroine looks like to me.

Ode to Dominican Women- I often thought of merging my current career with my passions a concept that lived in my head rent-free. I thought of making portraits of Dominican women heroes that had an impact on me and my motherland, the Dominican Republic. I spent weeks educating and submerging myself back into my childhood memories and my roots, as well as diving into the country’s history through books, documentaries, articles, and just pure research. I created these characters fictional and non-fictional, while thrifting and finding specific props that were nostalgic & represented the specific time period of that character. I not only modeled but also designed and curated all the aspects of the photographs, from the set design & props to styling of hair & makeup, clothing, to the selection and editing of each photo. My focus is on shedding light and telling the story of our journey, our culture, and the impact of women in our rich history, while also representing women around the globe.
