It began in the late afternoon after the verdicts were read. I went up to my rooftop with a view of the city and saw fires on the horizon all through the night. As a young documentary photographer, I walked through my neighborhood and experienced this moment in history.

Long before Black Lives Matter, there was the uprising in LA that ignited on April 29th, 1992. The brutal beating of Rodney King by police officers was captured on video and on news channels everywhere. Two weeks later, fifteen year old straight A student, Latasha Harlins was killed at a liquor store near her home.

These flash-points lit the match, but this collective public protest was a result of economic disparity and generations of racism and lifetimes of social inequality in the world, in the country, and in my hometown.
