“If people don’t have bread, let them eat cake!” is a quote attributed to Queen of France Marie Antoinette, who allegedly uttered it during hunger riots. It is unlikely that she actually said that, as the phrase comes from a book penned several decades earlier by Jean Jacques Rousseau. However, the famous words and her image have come to represent lack of understanding of the common people and their problems by monarchs (and rulers in general).
