Jizo (a.k.a. Kṣitigarbha) is dispatched to this world from the J division of the heaven of one hundred and thirty-three (Trāyastriṃśa) until the manifestation of Maitreya Buddha. They are active in all parts of the human world. There are Jizo who bring merit and benefit to people and Jizo who do not bring anything in particular. They do not harm you, but they may tease you. All Jizo are merciful and will protect you. They are tolerant, but you should avoid doing anything to offend them. If you encounter a Jizo on the street, in your bedroom, on the beach or in the desert, or somewhere, greet him or her with Oṃ ha ha vismaye svāhā.
