This concept is called the “invisible monster” the beast inside that is experienced by those suffering from mental health illness. The fact that others cannot visibly see an ailment or prove it with a lab test creates a barrier that causes a huge gap in understanding of mental health leading to discrimination, communication breakdowns, and a worsening feeling of loneliness. Individuals will also feel misunderstood, judged and will suffer in relationships with often worsening depression and suicidal ideation. This is a symptom of all mental health disorders however illnesses related to psychosis and personality disorders have the greatest discrimination against them. This piece comes with a large fine art gallery print and unlockable content of the process sketches for this piece redeemable by the buyer. 10% of the profits are being donated to "The mind deconstructed" a charity for mental health.
The "Monsters Inside Me" project is inspired by my personal experience with mental health which also include my experiences in the emergency room working with children that suffer from mental illness throughout the pandemic. Each piece highlights a different aspect of mental health and is aimed to open dialogue surrounding each topic. I hoped that by expressing my own journey I might resonate with others who have similarly faced mental health illness or have loved ones who have. 10% of the profit will be donated to “The Mind Deconstructed” a non-profit charity affiliated with The University of Minnesota aimed at raising awareness about mental health. The money will go towards research and to support their podcast that raises awareness about mental health.
