Gashadokuro, also known as Ōdokuro, are mythical creatures in Japanese mythology. They are skeletal giants which wander around the countryside in the darkest hours of the night. If they should happen upon a human out late on the roads, the gashadokuro will silently creep up and catch their victims, crushing them in their hands or biting off their head. I felt that the legend of Gashadokuro was a great metaphor about our inner self. Because isn’t it our greatest enemy? Our biggest sabotage comes from ourselves, our inner thoughts, that silently creep up and catch us just like the legend of this monstrous Yokai.
