Ravers at DJ Dave Haslam's legendary Manchester Freedom night at The Boardwalk Manchester with guest DJ Tin Tin. Shot with Canon EOS-1 f/2.8 24-35mm The Boardwalk nightclub was located on Little Peter Street in Manchester, England. This medium-sized club and rehearsal studios, was a popular live music venue in the late 1980s and early 1990s where bands such as Oasis and Northside made their live debuts. It was also one of Manchester's most prominent nightclubs. Along with other clubs like the Haçienda, and the International, the Boardwalk provided an important live venue for many local bands and Acid House nights.

PETER J WALSH collection image

I have one of the most comprehensive photographic collections of acid house as I worked for The NME, THE FACE, i.d. and Mixmag during this period of immense change in the UK. I photographed the bands of the time, The Stone Roses, The Happy Mondays, Oasis, 808 State, Primal Scream, The Chemical Brothers, A Guy Called Gerald and the DJ’s, Mike Pickering, Sasha, Laurent Garnier and Graeme Park. I also photographed the ravers, drag queens, fans, roadies, security and bar staff. I understood that I was witnessing an important pop-culture moment that would change the cultural landscape of the UK and the world forever.

My images have been exhibited in group exhibitions at The Venice Biennale, The Philharmonie de Paris, The Vitra Design Museum, Germany, Design Museum in London, The Museum Of Youth Culture, London and at the The British Culture Archive, Manchester. Five of my images are held in the permanent collection of The John Rylands Library in Manchester. A selection of my rave
