Artist: Benedikt Falkenstein is a German artist, who combines photography, creative code, film, and artificial intelligence with the goal of creating novel, unprecedented visual aesthetics. His creative process can be described as an interplay between human and computer.

Description: This artwork shows a collage of artificially generated maps. An image-to-image translation GAN (Pix2PixHD) then interpreted the landscape and plotted which areas of the country will be completely or seasonally flooded by the sea based on real data from 1984 to 2020. The ratio of land to submerged land aesthetically visualizes how dramatic and acute the consequences of climate change and the associated melting of the poles already are. In the future, this trend will continue to become even stronger, and more land will disappear. We must act, now!

Technique: The artwork is digitally created using styleGAN 2ada.
