This is another image generated by the Teotihuacan program. Because the program uses random values to create the image, an infinite number of variations are possible. Recursively placed squares in a grid evoke the layout of Teotihuacan, an ancient city in what's now Mexico. The repetition of the patterns is similar to how cities emerge, and the colors are like the earth we craft into spaces where we live, work, and play. Just like millennia ago, cities are where we thrive. The image was generated using a generative art program written in Clojure.

Teotihuacan was an ancient city near what’s now Mexico City. I found out about Teotihuacan when reading The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber and David Wengrow. The diagram of the city in it drew my attention. Its tightly packed right-angled polygons modeling the layout of the city got me thinking about how this look could be applied in the space of generative artwork. I wanted to celebrate not just this city, but cities in general. As people move and interact with each other, the city takes on a life of its own, shaping its residents as much as they shape it. It becomes more than the sum of its parts.
