What is a temple? For Mykhailo Skop, it’s a place where one faces the unusual. That’s why the temple of Artemis is not just a roof resting on Ionic columns ready to be burned down by Herostratus. It is a place of mystery and miracle.

The Ivankiv Historical and Local History Museum, where Maria Prymachenko's works were stored, is a temple of miraculous beasts. It was burned down by barbarians, but the beasts survived. Sensing danger, they left their home (taken out by locals) and made it unsacred.

In archival photos, Maria Prymachenko exhibits her works on a fence. This reminded Mykhailo Skop of the Ishtar Gate, decorated with images of mythical creatures, and the fence of the tabernacle, the portable tent temple of the ancient Jews.

Drawing inspiration from Viktor Palmov’s paintings, the artist recreated tabernacle architecture and included the solar beast to guard the collection as a cherub protects the entrance to paradise. The temple is shown from an inverted perspective that challenges the rational perception of space, which should not be understood, but felt.

Every day, dozens of cultural objects are being shelled in Ukraine, with numbers reaching over 450. Each destroyed museum, monument, or street is a valuable part of the country’s culture; they also play a crucial role in the lives of Ukrainians who call these places their home.

To help preserve and recover Ukraine’s culture, Depositphotos, an international content marketplace, collaborated with seven local artists to create a series of thematic NFT artworks for sale. Each illustration translates a unique, artistic vision of how some of the destroyed sites could look like in the future.

All NFT artworks are available for multiple purchases, with funds being directly transferred to the crypto wallet of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.
