We've all heard the phrase "Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in morning, sailors take warning."... But have you ever really thought about it?

How could one simple adage, with a couple of binary statements, be true everywhere at all times? I'd imagine the saying started in England or Europe or the Mediterranean, but does it hold true around the coasts of Africa or Australia? What about Cape Horn, home of some of the worst maritime weather on the planet? And do the sun's light's refracting rays and cloud colors really predict inclement weather in Maine, or the Gulf Coast, or, say, the Pacific Northwest?

These are some of the questions I didn't ponder while I stood there on Second Beach, barefoot with a tripod, taking in one of the finest sunsets of my life. Sometimes, you just need to revel in the after glow.
