Photograph of a statue of Abraham Lincoln in a public park in California. When taking the picture something occurred to me

Abe Lincoln probably gave a lot of thought as to how he would proceed with ending slavery, and freeing the slaves. It was during the Civil War, the nation was deeply divided over the issue of slavery and Lincoln was tasked with keeping the country together as one nation. How do I, Abe Lincoln, the President of the United States, free the slaves? How do we end slavery? By what process? By making it law, passing it through Congress? By putting the issue in front of the Supreme Court?

It must have been a difficult decision to ponder. When I saw the statue that’s what I thought about. Lincoln thinking. About freedom. About one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

In the end, Abraham Lincoln issued a Presidential Proclamation, the Emancipation Proclamation, on January 1, 1863, freeing the slaves.

From history.com, “The proclamation was a presidential order and not a law passed by Congress, so Lincoln then pushed for an anti-slavery amendment to the U.S. Constitution to ensure its permanence. With the passage of the 13th Amendment in 1865, slavery was eliminated throughout America”
