The photo of the Bubble Nebula was selected as an Astronomical picture Of the Day (APOD) by NASA, September 14, 2013.

This is one of the most interesting looking structures in a sky. NGC 7635 aka "Bubble Nebula", Sh2-162 or Caldwell11, is a Hydrogen emission nebula in the constellation of Cassiopeia. It is located near the open cluster M 52 at distance of about 11.000 light-years from Earth.

Although it looks delicate, the 10 light-year diameter bubble offers evidence of violent processes at work. The bubble structure is created by a strong stellar wind – a radiation pressure – from a massive, hot magnitude 8,7 central star, SAO 20575, several hundred thousand times more luminous and around 45 times more massive than the Sun. It can be seen in the image inside of the bubble, off-centered at right. A fierce stellar wind and intense radiation from that star has blasted out the structure of glowing gas against denser material in a surrounding molecular cloud.

The bubble is an expanding shock front inside a giant molecular cloud and it has a diameter more than 6 light-years. The spherical formation is expanding at speed of 650.000 km/h. Due the huge scale and distance we can't see the movement easily: in a century, the bubble in this image will be only about one pixel wider than now (~1 arc second)!

This natural-looking view of the cosmic bubble is composed from narrowband image data, also used to create a 3D model.

Stellar Collection by J-P collection image

Stellar Collection features 12 unique deep space photographs by J-P Metsävainio, a professional visual artist with a committed passion to reveal the hidden beauty of our universe. J-P is internationally known as a celebrity astrophotographer and author of a 12-year project to capture the deepest-ever panoramic view of the Milky Way.

J-P also recently co-authored the book 'Cosmic Clouds in 3D' with Brian May of Queen. As he puts it, "Revealing the hidden beauty of our universe is my passion. I stand in rapt adoration before all that I see. When art meets science, the results can be quite mind-blowing."

J-P's Stellar Collection features NFTs that have been selected and awarded by NASA, National Geographic and even the Vatican Observatory – and some previously unseen works!

Each NFT consists of the original astrophotograph and a gallery-quality acrylic/aluminum print personally signed by the artist available as Unlockable Content.
