Sandankyo Gorge in Hiroshima Prefecture is a deep gorge composed of rhyolite and granite porphyry. Many waterfalls, including Nidandaki Fall (two-tiered waterfall) and Sandandaki Fall (three-tiered waterfall), can be seen in the gorge, which extends about 16 km. River erosion has the greatest impact on the waterfalls, and as these waterfalls recede upstream due to erosion, a deep valley is formed downstream of them.

The Meotobuchi is an area where two abysses, one large and one small, are nestled together. The terrain is steep in Sandankyo Gorge, but this area is especially steep on both sides, and the water flows quietly through the deep pools that have formed between them.
