The idea of a spirit of place has resonated through the centuries. It derives from an ancient and widespread belief that particular parts of the world are occupied by gods, or spirits to be propitiated. This was a key element of Roman religion. While the spirit of the place/genius loci was originally, and for some still is, closely associated with beliefs about the sacred character of places, it has become increasingly secularised. The thesis of the paramnetic effect is that the spirit wants to return to the dimension of material substance in order to relive "the unique, distinctive and cherished aspects of place, the affects".
