I actually only photographed Alice in Chains once live, and once for a posed session. I don’t know why that was - couldn’t do everything, and they were off my Sub Pop-centric radar. But the show I did shoot, at the small pivotal Central Tavern, was off the hook and close-in. I’m glad I got to shoot them as a ‘small’ band.

This is a proof, or contact, sheet as it was made originally in the darkroom at the time, by placing the negatives between photo paper and glass and shining light on it from the enlarger. Note the frame numbers don’t run sequentially to the time of the pictures taken. The film was bulk loaded to save money - it would come in 100 foot rolls that we put in a daylight loader and wind into reusable cassettes, and the numbering would drift.

You can see how Layne starts with a heavy plaid shirt at the top (I think this might have been January) and loses it by the third row. #40 is my favorite, but this is one of those rolls where just about every picture is some solid action. As evidenced by the only one (of Jerry Cantrell) that was marked with a grease pencil at the time being one of our other featured NFT’s in this Fury collection.

Fury. Perhaps too strong of a word, in its original definition of invocation of violence, but it implies action of a quick and powerful kind, an attack so fast and strong that it can be like a blur. Grunge was strength and power, mixed with angst, anger, sexiness, and a nice heaping dose of snarky humor to top it off. Grunge was really just punk without the cultural trappings, overlaid with a heaping dose of fringe classic rock, new metal, ’60's garage, and Austin indie weirdness.

These are 11 great examples of the dynamic live shows these bands put on, shot in my distinct fashion, and mostly never seen. On the Alice in Chains proof sheet you can see my working style, and just how many expressive shots I was able to get. I tend to work very fast, in quite close and moving and swaying to the bands and music. A while back my karate instructor commented that I was very quick for my age. Yeah, I replied, that’s what I’ve been doing for a career my entire life. - Charles Peterson
