DERANGED Modernity, society after modernity, postmodern society, information society, risk society... We may be going through a period in which all these are intertwined and their differences cannot be easily determined. Everybody lives her/his period or periods within her/his own space. Space shapes the general ways of behavior or habitus and in turn, habitus shapes space. Ontologically, these two concepts maintain each other to a large extent. In Bourdieu’s terms, the conditions of ontological existence an individual internalizes in her/his body during the socialization process form the permanent and transferrable habitus for her/him. In this new period characterized by the intertwinement of different social periods, the borders separating habitus from space do no longer exist, and it’s observable that each individual has a space and is capable of creating various habitus in relation to that space. How do an individual’s different personalities within different habitus affect her/his very existence? To what extent is it possible to be an individual capable of realizing herself/himself and leading a life with strong bases? The easiest way out for the individual who cannot actually realize herself/himself would be to embrace the illusion that “she/he has realized herself/himself and has been approved”. Social sites form a space where it’s easiest to create this illusion. New society’s desire for temporary approval and momentary satisfaction has its equivalent in relations and sexuality as well. Sexuality too might have become a means of escape easily accessible but incapable of bringing the feeling of wholeness, completeness to the individual. ... Does the fact that people more easily reach and experience everything day by day usher in a sort of normalization by increasing disorder, in the light of the principles of entropy? Or is the very concept of individual under threat of extinction in ontological terms due to ever increasing chaos? This is a NFT that inspired and created from Can Sarıçoban’s fifth solo exhibition Deranged: literally expresses disorder, intermingling, imbalance, unstableness, disturbance and even mentally deranged. Using long-pose and light-coloring for the first time in contrast with his previous works, the artist creates shiny, neon colored, moving, stimulant images without any sharpness, which he expresses as “a kind of reaction unmaking the silence of calmness and melancholia”, and even a kind of “frenzy”.
