Summit Name: Mt. Hood

Location: Cascade Range, Oregon

Elevation: 11,240 ft.

Date: January 1st, 2019

Time/Orientation: 7:54AM/South Face

Edition: 1/1

Mt. Hood is a stratovolcano and the highest mountain in the state of Oregon. It is the 28th highest mountain in the United States and the fourth tallest in the Cascade range. It is also one of the most climbed mountains in the world with over 10,000 people attempting the summit annually.

This mountain is the mother of all of my inspirations in the backcountry. From hunting and fishing in the national forest as a kid with my Dad, and now climbing/backpacking/photography/snowboarding as an adult. Mt. Hood is in large part the reason why Iโ€™m a photographer today, and this area will always be a special place for me.

I took this image during a winter backpacking trip to a small ridge on the south side of Mt. Hood called Tom Dick and Harry mountain. With the first light of 2019 sweeping over the south face at sunrise and a fresh dusting of new snow, it is one of the most beautiful scenes of this mountain that Iโ€™ve experienced to date. If you look closely, you can see the Magic Mile chair lift from Timberline Lodge, and a handful of climbers making their way towards the summit and the first attempts of the year.

Summits of the West collection image

โ€œSummits of the Westโ€ is a collection of 20 images detailing the unique characteristics of individual peaks, volcanoes, and summits that scrape the sky along the west coast of North America. From Alaska to California, this collection spans over 2,500 miles of land from North to South. With over five years of backpacking and living among these mountains, โ€œSummits of the Westโ€ is the embodiment of my obsession with the wild and hard to reach places of this region of the World.

Each image in this collection is a fragment of my story, a fraction of a second in my life when my eyes aligned with a far away landscape. From dancing fog to sunrise alpenglow, my fascination with the beauty and complexity of these summits only grows stronger with time. This is a brief look into my journey as a photographer and my experience among these giants that scrape the sky.
