The Motherland Monument, as well as other monuments in Ukraine, were exempt from the decommunization effort set forth by the Ukrainian Parliament. Where street names were changes and communist symbols removed, the monument has remained, controversial in its cost and symbolism. In 2018, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance stated that the Soviet hammer and sickle should be replaced with the Ukrainian Trident. The depiction of the monument with the Trident overtaking the original symbolism is representation of future victory against tyranny.
