Signed & Dated 1893 Dutch Portrait

This portrait was made by an unidentified artist in 1893. In 19th century Dutch style, this beautiful portrait renders an old man sitting in what appears to be a kitchen. He is using a curved knife to slice a piece of cold meat that he holds in his left hand, while he has a drink on the tabletop. The choice of the subject could be associated with mid-19th century realism; a movement that chose to see and portray the everyday life of the lower class, thus showing the same dignity once used bestowed upon only saints, aristocrats, and kings.

The strong brush strokes give a sense of depth and help blend the different dark and light tonalities characteristic of Baroque painting and the Dutch school. The painting is framed within a beautiful gilded and carved wood baroque style frame from the same period that lightens up the dark-toned portrait. The piece has an illegible signature on the bottom right and the year 1893.
