When we think about the most famous artworks in the world, what we recall are often digitised reproductions of the work, and very rarely the real image as hung in a gallery or museum. The dimensions and colours of these reproductions do not give an accurate sense of scale or material. How many times have you heard someone say the Mona Lisa was smaller in The Louvre than they expected?

The way we see art is now shared with the computers who process these images, to understand their contents and origins. The Horizon Lines project creates a new way for people to see works. By stripping them down to hexadecimal values, we present them as something beautiful to the human eye, but nonsensical to machines. We hope this project inspires others to consider the way in which they view art.

KAAI 01 was made with using an algorithm, which dissected an image of an artwork into the hexadecimal colours within it. These are displayed from most to least frequently occurring. The owner of this NFT can see title, artist, year and medium of the original work.

The Horizon Lines collection image

Image processing has advanced to the point where computers can now see and understand art. This collection uses an algorithm to dissect famous artworks into their composite pixel values. Resulting in works which are beautiful for humans, but nonsensical for machines.
