[Verse 1]
"Stand up for the flag," they say
"All lives matter more," instead
"How dare you protest here?!"
"Go back to your country!"
"You people should be shot," they say
Another tone-deaf ear
[Verse 2]
"Playing stupid games," they say
"Winning stupid prizes,"
"Those Blacks deserve to die"
"Very fine people on both sides"
Will call us "THUGS" while planting drugs
Blindly insisting we "should just comply"
[Pre-Chorus]
Your anger; it masks the pain
From the racism around you
[Chorus]
Icarus, you're flying too close to the sun
You have just been trying to balance work with fun
But if you keep on buying the lies they feed to some
Then you will end up dying like every other one
[Verse 3]
"Things have gone too far," they say
"You should be like MLK"
As they ignore you again
"One man can change the world," they say
While soaking you with pepper spray
And kneeling on your neck
[Pre-Chorus]
Your anger; it masks the pain
From the racism around you
[Chorus]
Icarus, you're flying too close to the sun
You have just been trying to balance work with fun
But if you keep on buying the lies they feed to some
Then you will end up dying like every other one
[Bridge]
They make the decisions to fill Profit Prisons
With modern-day slaves for the labor they loot
And then they ignore their own power and privilege
Like swine trampling pearls of equality too
They weaponize phone calls to klansmen with badges
Enforcing supremacy's false legacy
They loot other cultures then burn them to ashes
By rewriting crimes of their own history
[Chorus]
Icarus, you're flying too close to the sun
You have just been trying to balance work with fun
But if you keep on buying the lies they feed to some
Then you will end up dying like every other one
I wrote this song in June of 2020 during the George Floyd protests in the United States. While heartbroken with the discovery of Elijah McClain's Murder (from 2019), I mournfully recorded this song into my iPhone while sitting in a Downtown Los Angeles stairwell with one continuous, uninterrupted take. The raw audio remains unedited.
Today is July 25, 2022 and although there has been some progress with the obvious police corruption and abuse of power detailed in the case, justice has still NOT been served.
