The Rim Fire burns in the Sierra National Forest and Yosemite National Park in late August 2013. The megafire was one of the largest in California history, and is now dwarfed by blazes 400% larger.

In this image there are multiple heads to the fire, showing the difficulty of the terrain and impacts to the mixed conifer ecosystem the fire contained. This image defines the duality of the Terra Flamma project, the warm glow of the fire enveloped by the inversion layer and blanket of a blue night sky. It was an example to me as I grew in my wildfire and climate photography coverage that one didn't need to be up and close and personal to a fire to tell it's story.

This was my first serious year of documenting wildfire, and I learned quickly that one needed good fitting fire boots to spend all day hiking with fire crews, in addition to correct fire shelters and other PPE and nomex to protect oneself while photographing, to tell the story instead of photographing it.
