Mount Ruapehu, Tongariro National Park, New Zealand
I had been looking at completing this hike for a few years, and one winter it finally worked out that I could drive to the location and hike it for sunset with beautiful high cloud conditions.
It takes 20kms to hike to this spot, The Tama Lakes, in Tongariro National Park New Zealand. A highly volcanic area, the mountain in frame is named Ruapehu and is still an active volcano to this day.
I reached the summit of Upper Tama lake right on sunset and the sky exploded into an absolutely epic array of colours right in front of my eyes. Ruapehu had recently had some snow and the light behind made for the most beautiful scene.
After already hiking to this spot 4 times before unsuccessfully, I was so happy to finally come out with a photo that truly shows how magical this location is.
The Mountains are Calling is the second collection by New Zealand photographer Rach Stewart of 20 single edition images after her first sold out collection Aotearoa Dreaming.
'I have been chasing Aotearoa New Zealand's mountains with my camera for the majority of my career with my signature style long exposure and atmospheric light photography.
Our natural world has such a pull on us as human beings, and many of us identify our souls with certain parts of its creation. To me the mountains are where I feel the most humbled by nature. Mountains lift me, but they scare me. They make me realise as humans we are just mere mortals strolling this earth for a short moment in time.
These images are some of my favourites from all the sunrises, sunsets, hikes and flights I have experienced with the mountains over the past 7 years. I hope you enjoy them too.'
