'Birds on a Pier' was created at Kinnegar Pier on the shores of Belfast Lough, in the small town of Holywood in County Down, N. Ireland.

This pier is located beside the Holywood Yacht Club, which is one of the oldest yacht clubs in Ireland and along a very popular walking trail, 13.4 miles from Belfast to Bangor.

To capture this image, I had to make sure that the tide was high. After checking my trusty Tide Apps on the phone, I was able to travel to this location, confident that I would be met with favorable conditions.

I set up this composition already knowing that this was going to be a Black & White image and shot a 350 seconds long exposure to create the results I was after. I wasn't expecting the birds at the end of the pier to stay still for so long, but I was delighted that they did and the beautiful ghosting effect they created really adds that little bit of extra interest to the image.
