This image was actually originally part of a time-lapse that I had set up to capture the setting of the Milky Way core over this beautiful lone tree in a lake. I liked the simple composition so much that I decided to stack 20 or so of these images together, to reduce noise reduction, and create a low noise still image (but I will also use the original video and mint it as an NFT in a future collection of time-lapses). I used some low-level lighting to light up the tree and this image was captured at just after 3am on a crisp July night here in Western Australia. The light pollution you can see to the right of the tree is from a local mine site. Astrophotographers go to great lengths to avoid light polluted skies but I believe sometimes, in an astrolandscape image, that light pollution can really add some contrast to the night sky and in this case even some colour, which then in turn adds to the image. Combining this with some beautiful green airglow that you can see just below the Milky Way core, plus some clouds that were building up on the horizon, and the image manages to pop even though the scene is relatively simple.

Our Milky Way collection image

Award winning Photographer, David Atkins (The Nocturnal Photographer), presents 12 minted images from the collection ‘Under the Milky Way’. Each image has a supply of 1 and is the only copy. Each image has been carefully selected for this collection and features beautiful and unique foreground compositions under the magnificent Milky Way core. Shot on location in various parts of Western Australia, David’s meticulous planning and creative inspiration combine to produce distinctive results of thought-provoking photography. Every image has resulted from new ideas of how to show off not only the incredible wonder of the milky way but also the magnificent landscapes we have on our planet. The challenges, the adventure and the feeling of peace and gratitude I feel when sitting under a sky of stars is, for me, unrivalled. Surprisingly few people have ever seen the Milky Way and so my main goal is to share and show off the diversity and wonder of what this world (and universe) has to offer.
