From Wheatfield with Crows to Wheatfield with Drones

2023 is the Van Gogh year. 140 years ago, Vincent Van Gogh came to the Dutch province Drenthe where he lived for three months. “Drenthe inspires me to paint for a lifetime’’, he said. ‘’I have found my destination.” He lived in the Veenoord lodging house, which is now the ‘Van Gogh House’- museum. This year also marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

One of his masterpieces is the “Wheatfield with Crows”. Crows flying over a yellow wheatfield in the menacing blue sky. While we celebrate the Van Gogh year, thousands of drones fly over the "wheatfields of the world" less than 2000 kilometres and less than three hours from Amsterdam. They sow death and destruction.

Henk Hofstra Collection collection image

Henk Hofstra is a Dutch artist who created a lot of big art projects in public spaces. He did that in many towns around the world, for example in Rotterdam, St. Petersburg, New York, Santiago de Chili and Wuhan/China. The projects are alienating, endearing, sometimes controversial and always talked about. They bring up a public debate or are responding at one. They show, twist or give a bright new sight at the everyday things all around us, the things we thought we knew so well.
